Barnet Youth Brass Band is made up of talented young brass players and percussionists. Directed by Peter Yarde Martin, the band plays an ambitious mixture of original brass band repertoire and classical, popular and jazz music to a high standard. The band is open to students up to the age of 21 who have reached a level of Grade 4 or above.
The band play 3-4 concerts a year at a variety of venues, including jazz nights at Mill Hill East Church and atmospheric winter concerts at St. John the Evangelist’s, Friern Barnet. As one of BEAT’s Flagship groups, the band appeared onstage at the Royal Albert Hall in BEAT’s Play On 2015, and earlier this year at the Oxford Street’s Regent Hall, alongside Barnet Youth Orchestra, Barnet Youth Wind Orchestra and One Voice Choirs.
Members of the band took part in the National Finals of the 2017 UK Brass Band Championships. The band undertakes regular tours, most recently to Cornwall.
While the main emphasis of the band is on developing playing and musicianship, and working hard to achieve a high standard of performance, this is done without detracting from the most important aim of music-making: having fun!
