Finchley Music Centre
Finchley Music Centre is a warm and friendly environment for your child to enjoy excellent musical training and opportunities. Finchley Music Centre is one of three Saturday Music Centres run by the Barnet Education Arts Trust. Concerts take place at the end of each term – these may vary according to the group attended.
What happens on FMC Saturdays?
On Saturdays we currently have five string groups (of various abilities) and additionally Barnet Youth String Orchestra. Also provided are Rock School, Steel Pans and sessions for Young Music Makers from Nursery to Year 2 age. Concerts take place at the end of each term. Finchley Music Centre has various string groups and instrumental groups of varied standards, giving players the opportunity to play together at a level appropriate to their own abilities. Students are promoted through the groups usually at the end of every academic year. This gives them an opportunity to get to know each other well whilst being challenged by harder music as the year progresses. If you play a string instrument or would like to start learning we would love to see you at Finchley Music Centre
Absolute Beginner String Group (Group 1)
At Finchley Music Centre we believe it is important to play an instrument in a group as soon as you start learning an instrument. Of course, you can join our higher groups at any stage but we have created an Absolute Beginners Group that players can join after as little as one lesson. This group takes place between 11.00-11.45am on Saturday mornings and is led by an experienced, specialist tutor. For more information contact the Head of Finchley Music Centre firstname.lastname@example.org
Finchley Music Centre has a full set of Steel Pans, taught by a specialist teacher and we would love to have more players. The Senior Steel Pan Orchestra rehearses from 8.30 – 9.30am on Saturdays. The Junior Steel Pan Orchestra meets on Wednesdays from 5 – 6pm.
We offer individual lessons on all string instruments, Drum Kit, Guitar, Orchestral Percussion, Piano and Recorder. Lessons on the instruments listed above are available to all children and adults subject to availability and a suitability test. Scholarships for individual music lessons are available for minority instruments such as the Viola and Double Bass.
Young Music Makers (YMM)
YMM classes are for children of nursery age through to school year 2. Classes aim to introduce children to the enjoyment of practical music making and to develop musicianship skills from the earliest possible age. They will learn to sing, play percussion instruments and understand basic music notation, rhythm and pitch, alongside learning social skills such as interacting in groups, and sharing a love and enthusiasm for music. From the beginning of school year 2, children have the opportunity to choose which instrument they would like to learn, following a demonstration by our excellent musicians. They will also get an opportunity to try out the instruments for themselves. Following this there will be a suitability test to ensure students choose an instrument suitable for them and start at a time when they are ready, depending on the child and the instrument chosen. Children who have been through Young Music Makers qualify for the free loan of an instrument for the first year. Children who are not yet ready to learn their chosen instrument at the end of Year 1 can join our Recorder and Musicianship Group.
Recorder and Musicianship Group
This group is for children in school year group 1 and above. It is an excellent preparation for playing in an ensemble as children will learn to read music notation through playing the recorder and singing. It is also available to pupils who are waiting to start on an orchestral wind instrument.
