Barnet Youth Orchestra
Barnet Youth Orchestra provides opportunities for students of all the orchestral instruments to perform to a high standard in a full symphonic setting. The orchestra performs termly concerts and tours are also organised to various European destinations. In July 2009 BYO toured Italy, giving well-received concerts in Florence, Lucca and Pistoia. In recent years the orchestra has given concerts at Regent Hall, Oxford Street, and for the Mayor of Barnet’s Appeal at the Peel Centre in Hendon. In April 2010 BYO performed at the Royal Albert Hall as part of Barnet’s One Voice concert, and again as part of BEAT’s Play On 2015. The conductor, Justin Fung, is assisted by his wonderful team of tutors:
- Julia Turner (1st Violin)
- Gabor Somfai (2nd Violin and Viola)
- Marianne Tyler-Brown (Cello and Bass)
- Kitty Pluygers (Woodwind)
- Ed Willson (Brass)
- Aidan McAtominey (Percussion)
Any other musically minded sons, daughters, brothers, sisters or students out there who may be planning on going to university? At most universities one of the premier ensembles will be the university orchestra. Be prepared early! Come and learn the standard repertoire with us now! (Especially good for brass players to learn those tricky transpositions and clefs!) We aim to provide first class repertoire by playing at least 90% original parts — the very notes the great masters penned! Remember, you don’t even need to be studying music at university to enjoy playing these great classical masterpieces!
Barnet Youth Orchestra takes place on Thursday evenings from 6 – 9pm at Finchley Music Centre, Moss Hall Junior School, Nether Street, West Finchley N3 1NR.
