Barnet Youth Wind Orchestra

Barnet Youth Wind Orchestra features the most talented brass, woodwind and percussion musicians in the Borough of Barnet and surrounding areas. This full symphonic wind orchestra enjoys an enviable reputation as one of the flagship ensembles of Barnet Education Arts Trust.

Lead by conductor Fred Slide, who played in this very ensemble as a student, players are challenged, have fun and are able to use music-making in this environment as the perfect break from the daily rigours of studying, exams and work.

BYWO gives a minimum of three concerts to the public each year and performs varied, exciting and challenging music; focus is on playing original and contemporary works for wind orchestra as well as a mixed repertoire including music from shows, films, jazz and classical arrangements. As one of BEAT’s Flagship groups, the orchestra appeared onstage at the Royal Albert Hall in BEAT’s Play On 2015, and earlier this year at the Oxford Street’s Regent Hall, alongside Barnet Youth Orchestra, Barnet Youth Brass Band and One Voice Choir.

BYWO is open to musicians aged 21 and under, with the general standard equivalent to Grade 6 and above. Entry is via auditions, which are held throughout the academic year and can be arranged by contacting the conductor.

Barnet Youth Wind Orchestra rehearses on Friday evenings 5.30pm to 7.30pm at BEAT Music Academy Central, Moss Hall Junior School, Nether Street, West Finchley N3 1NR. There is easy access by car, free parking and West Finchley tube station is only a short walk away.
