Barnet Schools’ Music Festival 2019 will take place in June on 10th – 13th and 18th – 20th. The festival, now in its 19th year, will run for seven days at the Artsdepot in North Finchley and features children from primary and secondary schools from across the borough.
At the heart of the festival, children join forces to perform as a massed choir singing a wide range of songs. In addition, all schools perform their own item of music, reflecting the diversity, variety and excellence of music in Barnet schools.
Second Gala Concert at Regent Hall

The concert took place at Regent Hall, 275 Oxford Street, London W1C 2DJ. For more videos see the group pages (links above).

BEAT was delighted to receive funding from Friday Afternoons for One Voice Connects, a recently delivered choral transition project with a local cluster of primary schools and a secondary school in Barnet. The project aimed to give a high quality choral experience to children from Years 5-8, provide CPD in choral teaching, support singing across the primary-secondary transition and create a local cluster of schools to collaborate and share good practice in singing.
Each of the five schools received 3 workshops in school for participating children and staff, and a celebration event took place in March, and was a great success. Tudor, Northside, Manorside and Moss Hall Primary, and The Compton all performed their own song from the Friday Afternoons Song Bank, and sang several massed songs. The schools also took part in the Barnet Schools Music Festivals in June at the ArtsDepot, where Friday Afternoons songs were being sung, amongst others.
On Saturday 17th March we had an a cappella celebration bringing together a youth choir, a women’s vocal ensemble and a men’s chorus, singing a mix of pop, folk, jazz, musicals, doo wop, classical, and barbershop – and supporting BEAT and Youth Music.
BEAT’s own One Voice Choir provides young singers from Y6 to Y13 with challenging repertoire in 3 and 4 part harmony, opportunities to sing solo and regular concerts and joint performances with other youth ensembles.
Bella Cora recently celebrated its 40th anniversary, and is an established female vocal ensemble, performing a broad repertoire at concerts, charity and community events in and around north London.
Meantime Chorus is a male a cappella chorus dedicated to musical excellence across a variety of musical styles and to promoting both new choral music and the barbershop style.
From September 2018 BEAT has been working with Open Up Orchestras to create an inclusive ensemble at Mapledown School. The orchestra is called Access All Areas and in partnership with award winning Open Up Orchestras will use a range of music technology tools and traditional instruments to enable all students to participate in the music making that other students in Barnet currently enjoy. BEAT has been selected as one of a small number of hubs to work with Open Up Orchestras after a bidding process to demonstrate capacity to deliver this work.
Chair Martin Baker said, “I am delighted that BEAT has been given this opportunity to participate in this national scheme. It represents BEAT’s commitment to the development of inclusive music making in Barnet.” Steve Carroll, Headteacher of Mapledown School said, “We are so excited to be working with the the Open Up Orchestras and Barnet BEAT partnership. This programme will give our students practical real-time support to create music and performance that is both authentic and genuinely inclusive. I am sure we will surprise and delight a lot of people. Thank you.”
